CURRENT EVENT SUMMARIES
Recent Resignations in Italy are putting the Italian government in crisis. There has recently been five ministers that have resigned who belonged to the Silvio Berlusconi`s center- right party. (Povoledo) While this may not seem like much these five minsters were a vital part to the smooth running of Italy`s Parliament. Due to these ministers resigning and walking out on the government President Napolitano and Prime Minister Letta had to hold a special meeting to discuss this unfortunate event. From this event both men were concerned with the current political and financial stability of not just Italy, but Europe. Letta and Napolitano came to the agreement to today have the confidence of Parliament- not just for three days, but to actually apply a program. In addition Letta made it very clear that he would no longer be bound by Mr. Berlusconi`s People of Liberty Party. ( Povoledo) Overall from this article I took away how dramatic and life changing of a difference one person or a group of people can make. I think this article is evident of this statement and proves how important and influential people in power are.
Although not apparent to everyone Italy`s Prime Minister Enrico Letta is still uneasy about an alliance he has with party leader Silvio Berlusconi. Recently on October 2nd , 2013 Berlusconi gave a last minute speech about how he supports the government in taking a vote of confidence. ( Faris-Rome) Furthermore the final vote in the senate was tallied and came in at 235 to 70 in favor of the government. The fate of Berlusconi is however uncertain due to his scandalous past and control of the country’s media. In addition Berlusconi and his party known as the People of Liberty Party seem to not be heading anywhere anytime soon. ( Faris-Rome) At the time of this article it was said that really the only way to rid the country of Berlusconi is to beat him at the ballot box and as long as he is around the Italian government will never be normal. ( Faris-Rome) This article gave me greater understanding of the corruption and twisted motions of the Italian government. I thought this article gave a decent amount of background information while still staying on topic and within the news story.
