10 Most Significant events in Italy`s History
1. 800 to 600 BC- The Greeks, Etruscans ,and other groups settle in Italy. This is an important event in Italy`s history because this shows the first groups of people that invade Italy and start to call it their home. This leads to populating the country and it becoming its own nation later on.
2. 753 BC - Rome is Founded. This is a huge event in Italy`s history because Rome is the first known city that was found in Italy. Therefore Rome is where Italy was grown and it truly shows how the country began to thrive and conquer.
3. 509 BC- The Monarchy is overthrown and Rome is now a republic. This event is important because a Monarchy is completely different than a Republic. A monarchy is a government led by one person such as a king or queen. Where as a republic is a government system where the power is held by the people and their elected group of representatives. By Rome becoming a republic this then allows the people or citizens to have a say in what they believe in.
4. 44 to 46 BC - Julius Caesar rules as dictator. This is an extremely important event because Julius Caesar is a powerful person and is even more powerful and influential as a dictator. A dictator is someone who has sole power and gained this power usually by force. Therefore this person always gets their way. Furthermore by Caesar becoming dictator this changes how the people were formerly being ruled.
5. 27 BC- Augustus becomes the very first emperor of the Roman Empire. An emperor is the ruler of an empire or space of land. For example Augustus had rule of all of Rome and was therefore in charge. This is important because again the government and structure of Italy is changing and a new ruler has come forward.
6.1330 to 1550- The Renaissance thrives in Italy. It particularly is popular in Rome, Florence, and Venice. The Renaissance is important because first of all it means rebirth or renewal. Furthermore during this time period Italy was able to thrive and focus on the arts and literature that maybe had not been so popular before. Popular tourists attractions such as The Sistine Chapel were painted during this time period. In addition the Renaissance shows the first popularity of artists and writers alike.
7.1861- Italy becomes a unified nation under King Victor Emmanuel II. This is an extremely important time because now Italy is recognized as a nation and they are also united. United meaning under one rule and purpose versus being pulled in many different directions.
8.1915- Italy enters WWI on the side of the Allies. This event in history because it shows where Italy`s loyalty lies and also it shows who they think they can trust. They were on the allies side alone with the United States and also countries like France and the United Kingdom.
9.1946- Italy changes from a monarchy to an democratic republican. This is again extremely important because Italy's government has changed and is involving. They went from a monarchy to a democratic republican. A democratic republican is where the ultimate authority is by the people.
10.1984- Catholicism is no longer Italy`s formal state religion. This is important because now Italians can choose their own religion without the constant pressure to be Catholic and possibly be forced to believe in something that they disagree with.
